Meet the Instructor: Gareth beer

What gets you excited about Technology?

The future! How things are always evolving and changing. The tech sector is very fast paced and you have to be on your toes all the time ready to adapt to new technologies coming in.

How long have you been coding? How did you get started?

I have been coding for about 18 months now, I started out playing around on codeacademy for fun then when I realised this was something I really enjoyed and wanted to do for a career I began my journey with Manchester Codes as a student on the 6 month course.

What do you enjoy about working at Manchester Codes?

The best thing about working at Manchester Codes is the people, the team we have here are amazing! At both their jobs and as individuals. I have learnt so much just from reading discussions between colleagues about problems they face or have faced in work as well as watching how they deliver the course content with such enthusiasm. We are all passionate about coding and at helping other people reach their goals.

Favourite language and framework/library/ tool?

Javascript! Toss up, I use Angular a lot in my full time role and have come to really enjoy working with it, but we use React within Manchester Codes and for personal projects I like to use react as it's just so easy to use.

Least favourite language and framework/library/ tool?

Don't have one!

One piece of advice you have for people fresh to Software development?

Embrace the fact that you can't know everything and it is ok to have to google or re read documentation multiple times!

Outside of work, what do I like to do for fun? How do you spend your downtime?

I am a very active person so I spend my down time out and about on my road bike or running, hiking, climbing, anything that gets me moving and the adrenaline going!

What did you want to be when you were younger?

I actually never had a vision of what I wanted to be when I was a kid. I have spent a lot of my adult life travelling and moving between different jobs which helped me find out what it is I want and what I don't want in life.

If you were stranded on a remote island, alone. What piece of technology/ gadget would you be unable to live without?

My Mac - along with my Spotify subscription - music is life!

What is your day job?

Frontend developer
