Meet the team: Ersel Aker

Head of Teaching at Manchester Codes

What gets you excited about Technology?

Solving puzzles and a bit of magic!

How long have you been coding? How did you get started?

More than 15 years now. I spent my childhood in a small village in Cyprus, seen a few computers up until I was 10. Love at first sight I guess. I found computers really fascinating and self-taught myself throughout my teens.

What do you enjoy about working at Manchester Codes?

Seeing our graduates find work that's fulfilling. Our teaching staff are a fantastic bunch as well. Engineers by day, tutors at night. They're all magicians and angels ๐Ÿง™๐Ÿ˜‡

Favourite language and framework/library/ tool?

Obviously, JavaScript. It's quirky and can be odd at times. Just like humans :)

Least favourite language and framework/library/ tool?

Most object oriented languages. So much ceremony to do simple thingsโ€ฆ

One piece of advice you have for people fresh to Software development?

Keep a curious mind and experiment. Be hands on and deliberate with your learning. Don't spend too much time reading or listening to other people program. Grasp the basics and go try to build ideas you have in mind!

Outside of work, what do like to do for fun? How do you spend your downtime?

Exercise, reading and writing ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿ‹๏ธ๐Ÿ“ƒโœ’๏ธ๏ธ I write a newsletter called The Stoic CTO.

What did you want to be when you were younger?

I was lucky to know that I wanted to work with computers from an early age.

If you were stranded on a remote island, alone. What piece of technology/ gadget would you be unable to live without?

My Kindle with a USB solar panel powered charger.
